ILLEGAL/LEGAL IMMIGRATION – YES/NO
There should be an easier way to handle the Latino illegal immigration problem in the United States, other than sending everyone back to Mexico and building walls on our borders. We need the Mexican workers here in the United States, and indeed, the Mexican workers provide useful skills for all of our citizens to enjoy. Isn’t there a simple way where workers can gain a work permit and work at jobs they’re skilled at? Isn’t there a way the Mexican government can increase its worker productivity in its own country; therefore, establishing a stronger middle class for its people?
I don’t know the solution for the mass border crossings, except to say that at one time or another, most or all of our present day forefathers crossed the oceans and borders to come to America, looking for the bigger dream. Parts of my family came from Ireland to America during the great potato famine in Ireland. They worked hard on the railroads and farms in America and established themselves professionally and skillfully in other labor pools, eventually becoming valued citizens of the United States. I’m sure they would have stayed in the beautiful country of Ireland had there been alternatives for providing for their families. It was starvation for their families, or find work someplace else. Is it so different today with the Mexican citizens than it was with our own forefathers?
The border crossings should be legal, so the people crossing can provide our border patrols with background checks for the sake of our Homeland Security. The way the illegal crossings are being handled, with masses of workers crossing each day, no one can keep track of who’s who (or) who is crossing from what country (or) what type of background. Then there’s ‘s another issue entirely, but it all ties in together.)
The “illegal” influx of Mexican citizens are worrisome, and should be a major factor in allowing workers to enter legally . . . and with papers of some sort. I say . . . give out legal work permits to those who have a sponsor/employer in our country. If they want to resettle here, say in two years, with a steady and clean work history, allow them to choose their country of origin. Allow the migrant workers the opportunity to earn their legal status after a given time . . . exactly like out forefathers were given the opportunity to become U.S. citizens.
I observed a Mexican labor party erect a beautiful stone wall in a neighborhood close to where I live. The illegal immigrants work hard and have immense skills for stone masonry. Our up and coming American youthful labor force has all but ignored these olden and valuable skills, and stonemason skills are in demand and appreciated here in the Southwest. Those beautiful walls of multi-colored rock, with rust colored variations, depicting local/ancient tribal customs and cultures, wouldn’t be ingrained within those walls of stone for us to enjoy every day without these master stonemasons. Ironic isn’t it? Latino/Mexican stonebuilders, preserving the Southwest Indian culture with their masonry skills – preserving forever – our Native American heritage and long ago way of life – along with an important part of our historical past, preserved in stone. . . for the future of our American offspring. I think the answer to the illegal immigration problem lies somewhere close to our minds, hearts, and souls. Suggestions? Comments? Resolutions?
